  • Italy cooks the longest ever pizza: 1.5 km

Milan (AFP) – On Saturday Italy broke the record for the world’s longest pizza – a 1.5 km Margherita, served at Expo Milan 2015, which had food as one of its themes.

Guinness World Records judge, Lorenzo Veltri, awarded the title to Italy for the 1,595.45-metre pizza, which needed 1,500 kg of tomatoes, one and a half tonnes of mozzarella, rivers of extra virgin olive oil and five ovens in which to cook it.

The famous fresh basil pizza, originally created in June 1889 in Naples by Raffaele Esposito, chef of the Pizzeria Brandi, to honour Queen Margherita of Savoy on an official visit to the city, was served to some 30,000 Expo visitors seated at 800 tables.

The title had previously been held by Spain, before 80 pizza makers from all over Italy snatched it away. Three hundred metres of this record-breaking pizza was donated to the Milan Food Bank.

Fans of this extremely popular dish are relying on the record to strengthen the bid for pizza to be listed as a Unesco World Heritage treasure – a petition in support of the bid has already collected over 300,000 signatures.
